Toronto sledge hockey is committed to meeting the needs of the community. As such, we highly value the input and commitment of volunteers at every level of programming. No matter what your interest in sledge hockey, we have something for you. Our volunteers help with everything from sport development and program planning, to hands on facilitation on the ice and at the rink. We welcome all applications, but note that some positions do have a minimum age requirement. At this time, we are looking particularly for people who are comfortable on their skates, and familiar with the rules of hockey who can assist on the ice and around the rink. Volunteer TrainingAll volunteers receive training in program philosophies, general sledge hockey rules, disability awareness, transfer techniques and safety, our general coaching philosophies and techniques. Selected volunteers will also have the opportunity to take Hockey Canada certification courses in Coaching and Officiating. Volunteer RolesGeneral Program Facilitator: Our program facilitators are the backbone of the program. They are responsible for getting everyone out on the ice with the right equipment at the right time. They help players with their personal equipment; assist with transfers in and out of the sledges; perform equipment checks and minor maintenance; and assist staff with general program delivery. General Program Facilitators must be at least 18 years old. Assistant Coaches: Assistant coaches help instructors on the ice at a level appropriate to their experience in the game of sledge hockey. Some volunteers will help with setting up drills and coaching individual players on the ice. Others will act as 'pushers' for players who need assistance manoevering their sledges around the ice. All on-ice volunteers must pass an on-ice skating evaluation prior to volunteering. Program Directors and Committee Members: Toronto Sledge Hockey is looking for experienced volunteers to help coordinate various aspects of the program at an administrative level. These volunteers will play to their strengths in marketing and promotion, fund raising, sport development, volunteer management, and general program planning. |
